France, 26 August (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A France storm alert is in force across 12 departments on Wednesday evening as Météo-France warns of potentially severe thunderstorms bringing hail, intense rainfall and powerful wind gusts to western and north-western parts of the country.
Orange warnings begin across western France
Météo-France placed Charente, Charente-Maritime, Ille-et-Vilaine, Indre-et-Loire, Loir-et-Cher, Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Sarthe, Deux-Sèvres, Vendée and Vienne under orange thunderstorm vigilance from Wednesday evening.
The warning period begins from 6pm, although timings vary between departments, with the severe weather risk continuing into the early hours of Thursday in some areas. The thunderstorms are expected to move eastwards during the evening.
Hail and strong winds raise disruption risk
Météo-France said the developing storms could produce significant hail, strong wind gusts and intense electrical activity. The most severe conditions are expected between Poitou-Charentes, Pays de la Loire, eastern Brittany, Perche and Sologne.
Forecasters said hailstones could reach around 2cm to 5cm in diameter, while rainfall could reach approximately 30mm within an hour. Wind gusts could approach 100km/h and locally exceed that level.
The combination increases the possibility of local transport disruption, damage to exposed property and hazardous conditions for people travelling during the evening.
Météo-France warns of potentially violent storms
Météo-France described the episode as requiring particular vigilance because there is a “risque marqué de phénomènes violents” — a significant risk of violent weather phenomena.
The official forecaster advises people to follow updated weather vigilance information as conditions develop. Its guidance for thunderstorms highlights risks associated with lightning, hail and intense rainfall.
The France storm alert follows another period of turbulent weather affecting parts of the country earlier in the week.
Severe weather follows storms in southern France
The latest warnings come after violent thunderstorms affected southern France during the night from Monday into Tuesday. A tornado struck Pomas in the Aude department on Monday, adding to concerns over potentially damaging weather during this week’s unstable conditions.
Wednesday’s system is focused farther north and west, with atmospheric conditions expected to become increasingly unstable during the afternoon before the strongest storms develop towards the evening.
