Antwerp (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – On the afternoon of Friday, August 21, 2026, there was an accident involving the overturning of a truck at the North Sea Terminal located at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, which is regarded as one of the busiest ports for container traffic in Europe. The overturning of the truck caused the entrapment of the driver within the cab of the truck.

How Did Emergency Responders Free the Trapped Driver?

As a result of the emergency call made, a rescue team from the Fire Department of the Antwerp zone was dispatched for the purpose of freeing the trapped driver with hydraulic cutters. However, no exact period in which it took to rescue the trapped individual was provided. Nonetheless, the usual process of handling such an incident would entail securing the car and cutting into it until the victim is released.

“The driver was still trapped in his cab after the accident. Fire Department Zone Antwerp arrived on the scene and was able to free him from the truck,”

according to initial reports from the terminal.

What Is Known About the Driver’s Condition?

No official announcement has yet been made about the health status of the driver at the time of the rescue. In previous cases at the Port of Antwerp, where drivers have been pulled from upside-down trucks, they have been taken to the nearest hospital to have their health checked, even if there were no visible signs of injury at first glance.

Where Exactly Did the Accident Occur?

The accident occurred in the North Sea Terminal, a leading container terminal located in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. The terminal plays an important role in being the point through which the transatlantic and intra-European movement of containers passes through. It is strategically placed along the Deurganck dock. However, the exact location of the terminal where the accident happened has not yet been indicated.

Why Is This Incident Significant for Port Safety?

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges, which is Europe’s second-largest port, has encountered frequent problems with safety in recent years, especially those that involve heavy machinery and port terminals. This accident comes amid other accidents involving trucks within the port, such as a deadly forklift collision that occurred in June 2024 and the tipping of a diesel tanker in October 2025.

“The number of accidents at level crossings in the port has decreased significantly in recent years,”

noted Port of Antwerp-Bruges authorities in a November 2023 safety campaign, yet vehicle-related incidents continue to pose risks.

When Have Similar Truck Accidents Occurred at the Port?

There have been many accidents involving trucks and heavy machinery in the Port of Antwerp within the last three years. On October 13, 2025, there was an accident in which a tank truck overturned, spilling fuel on the Kastelweg at the Port of Antwerp. This caused much congestion during rush hours but no casualties. On June 5, 2024, there was an accident in which Roald Serneels, a 34-year-old worker, was run over and killed by a 32-ton forklift truck. Moreover, on October 28, 2023, there was a fatality after a crane collapsed while carrying out loading at dock 913.

What Caused the Truck to Overturn?

There is no official statement as to what the cause of this accident on Friday was. The possible causes of such accidents can be either the technical failure (broken brakes and/or broken steering wheel) or the human factor (driving too fast and/or mistakes made when turning) or load shift (cargo not tied) or weather conditions (wet road). Safety inspectors of Belgium, which includes the Federal Police and labor inspectorate, will initiate the investigation of the accident like it was done in cases like this one before.
