Anderlecht (Brussels Morning Newspaper): In Anderlecht, around 600 people joined a peaceful parade celebrating Syrian culture, as noted by Mayor Fabrice Cumps. Concerns grew at night about possible disruptions. Meanwhile, in Syria, rebel groups took control of Damascus, challenging President Bashar al-Assad, who has ruled for 24 years.

According to Mayor Fabrice Cumps, around 600 people participated in a parade in Anderlecht. The event began near Chaussée de Mons, a neighborhood with many Syrian-owned businesses. He mentioned that the atmosphere was festive and peaceful, highlighting the strong community and cultural pride among the Syrian residents in the area.

What risks did Mayor Cumps highlight during the peaceful parade in Anderlecht?

Mayor Cumps was worried about possible risks at night. Local officials were concerned that other groups might join the event, which could disturb the peaceful atmosphere. The police were alert and monitored the situation to prevent any problems. There were worries about how things might change as it got darker, especially with large crowds.

During the night from Saturday to Sunday, rebel groups led by radical Islamists took control of the Syrian capital, claiming they had “liberated” Damascus and were fighting against President Bashar al-Assad, who has been in power for 24 years. It is still unclear where Assad has gone after leaving Damascus airport.
