Ghent (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The “One of Us” pilot project in Ghent, started by Ben Neyens, helps kids in crisis stay with families from their school. Around 4,000 parents were informed, and screenings will begin before Easter.

The “One of Us” pilot project is moving forward.  Parents who said they would help have time to think about it before they decide.  They will have their homes checked to make sure they are safe for kids.  The program organizers want to make sure only people who are ready to help take part. They mentioned that if everything goes well, the program will be ready to help kids after Easter.

“We will then provide screenings in the coming weeks. Employees will visit the families at home. Everyone has to be up for it, of course, because emergency shelters do have an impact. We hope to be able to use the new host families after the Easter holidays.”

How is the One of Us program in Ghent helping kids in need?

The “One of Us” project in Ghent helps kids who are having a hard time at home. According to officials, the project helps these kids stay with families in their school, so they don’t have to move away from their friends and school. The families who help are from the same school as the kids they are helping.

They mentioned that the kids can stay in their school, keep their friends, and still do the things they love. The project helps families by giving them a chance to get help before things get worse. The project also helps the families who are helping by giving them support and guidance.

“This way, oxygen can be provided in difficult home situations so that it does not escalate, “

Says Pom Cattoor of the crisis hotline.

The people who started the “One of Us” project hope that 10 families will sign up to help kids who need a place to stay. They want to make sure that the families who help are ready for the job because taking care of a child in an emergency is a big responsibility.

Officials mentioned that the project needs money to keep going, so they are asking the city of Ghent and the government for help. If the project works well, it could be used in other parts of the country.
