Gistel (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Gistel is launching a campaign to recruit 24 new volunteer firefighters for its local fire station. Steven Ghyselbrecht emphasises the need for community involvement, hosting the “Pompier-word-je-hier” Day on March 8, 2025, to showcase firefighting roles and training opportunities.

Gistel has launched a new campaign to find volunteer firefighters for the local fire station. According to the officials, the campaign uses bold posters to catch people’s attention and emphasize the importance of getting more volunteers.

Steven Ghyselbrecht from the fire station says they need about 24 new volunteers. He mentioned that the aim is to get people talking, change people’s ideas about who can be a firefighter, and encourage more people to join.

“It is now up to us to ask our citizens for help. We ask them to think about the job as a volunteer firefighter,”

Says Steven Ghyselbrecht of the Gistel Fire Station.

“We are looking for a total of about 24 people.”

Why is Gistel hosting “Pompier-word-je-hier” day on March 8, 2025?

Gistel is planning an event called “Pompier-word-je-hier” Day on March 8, 2025, to help recruit new volunteer firefighters. According to officials, attendees can learn about the job, the training needed, and the benefits of volunteering. They will also get to try on gear, use equipment, and practice basic emergency skills. They mentioned that current firefighters will be there to answer questions and share their experiences. The goal is to encourage more people to consider joining and helping the community.

According to the authorities, this campaign shows the growing problem that many fire stations in Belgium face with finding enough volunteers. They mentioned that this shortage puts more pressure on firefighters and can slow down response times in emergencies.
