Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in an interview, said that Ukraine required broader security guarantees, Vladimir Putin was not afraid of Europe, and he insisted U.S. President Donald Trump be on Kyiv’s side.

We want him (Trump) to be on the side of justice, on the side of Ukraine,

Zelenskiy told Fox News in the interview.

Putin is not afraid of Europe.

He added Ukraine could not accept Russia’s occupation, but it favored a diplomatic solution.

Recently, Donald Trump has made headlines with his proposed solutions to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. His views have been mainly aimed at quick negotiation and potential sanctions against Russia in case of an unsatisfactory conclusion.

Trump appealed for an urgent end to this war and feels that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin are to be equated in terms of responsibility for the continuation of this war. He reiterated that “now is the time” the conflict has to end to avoid any further lives being lost.

How is Zelenskyy confident in Trump’s ability to mediate?

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly voiced his expectations for the new U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelensky voiced confidence that a “strong” Trump would be able to handle the necessary calls for negotiations with Russia.

He believes that a certain influence from Trump may put pressure on Russia to engage in a conversation, saying,

I really count on him, and I think our people really count on him.

In early 2025, in the course of negotiations, Zelenskyy stressed the need for proper security guarantees to Ukraine, preferably from NATO. He said that if such guarantees were not given, the danger from Russia would continue, as “If we do not have security guarantees, Putin will come again.”

Zelenskyy further underlined the need for cooperation between the U.S. and European countries in supporting Ukraine’s stance against Russia. He said that he and Trump could work together to provide powerful security guarantees along with the other European leaders.
