Zaventem (Brussels Morning newspaper) – Zavo Zaventem teams up with TCR for the Greenpower Challenge Benelux on May 25, 2025, promoting STEM education through electric kart racing.

Zavo Zaventem School is getting ready for the Greenpower Challenge Benelux. This is a competition where students design, build, and race electric karts. The event will take place on May 25, 2025. Daan is a fifth-year Electromechanical Engineering student at Zavo Zaventem Daan and his team are excited to show their self-built kart. They have worked hard to fix issues they had last year.

Daan said,

“Last year we still had problems with the rear axle, but we have solved that now.”

The team combines theory with real engineering skills. They will compete against 100 teams from schools in Belgium, including some from Flemish Brabant. The Zavo Zaventem team is ready to race.

How are Zavo students building karts for the Greenpower Challenge?

Zavo Zaventem is taking part in the competition this year with two teams. One team has students under 16 years old, and the other team has students over 16. This allows students of all ages to join. The younger team is learning basic engineering and teamwork.

The older team is working on more difficult tasks and showing their skills. Both teams have spent months building their karts. They want to represent their school well. The school’s support for STEM education helps students learn together at different levels.

Zavo Zaventem is joining the Greenpower Challenge Benelux with help from TCR. TCR is a company in Steenokkerzeel that makes airport equipment. They are providing materials and sponsorship for the students. This support helps the students design and build their electric karts. TCR thinks this competition is a good way to help young people learn about new and eco-friendly technologies.

According to Tom Vandecasteele, the operations manager at TCR, they are happy to help young people learn about future technology. He believes that building electric karts is important for their work at airports. This partnership helps students and shows TCR’s commitment to innovation. It also supports the next generation of engineers who will make progress in the field.

“We are happy to support the education of young people who are working with the technology of tomorrow. Building electric karts fits in perfectly with our activities at airports, where we are fully committed to electrification,”

Concludes Tom Vandecasteele, operations manager at TCR.

What skills do Zavo Zaventem students develop by building karts for the Greenpower Challenge?

According to authorities, the competition is more than a race. It allows young people to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math. In addition, there are schools taking part from Aarschot, Halle, and Tienen. Students are working hard to improve their designs. The Greenpower Challenge teaches teamwork and problem-solving. It also raises awareness about being eco-friendly.
