Ypres (Brussels Morning Newspaper): The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is restoring the historic Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium, with completion expected by summer 2025. Geert Bekaert announced renovations include cleaning, brickwork repairs, and new lighting. The project also involved removing asbestos from the roof.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) has been working on a major restoration project at a historic war grave site since April last year, aiming to preserve its durability and historical importance. Geert Bekaert from the CWGC stated they expect the work to take another 6 to 9 months, targeting completion by next summer. The project includes cleaning the stone elements, replacing old mortar between the stones, and repairing the brickwork to ensure the site remains protected from weather damage.

What are the latest updates on the Menin Gate restoration project in Ypres?

The roof of the historic site has been completely renovated, with the old covering removed and there is a new roof covering. This process included safely removing asbestos from the old materials to meet modern safety standards. Inside, similar updates have been made, replacing old materials to match the care given to the exterior. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) aims to protect the site’s historical significance, ensuring it remains a lasting tribute for future generations to honor those commemorated.

In the next few weeks, the temporary roof at the Menin Gate will be removed, and the scaffolding around Menen and Ypres will also be removed. Some scaffolding will be for a little longer because work is still happening there. The inside of the Menin Gate will be finished soon, with new lights being added in the spring, and the sound system has been updated.
