Ypres (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Jan Yperman Hospital in Ypres became Belgium’s first hospital with the gold Cycle Friendly Employer label, praised for secure bike parking, showers, repair points, and awareness campaigns, with director Cientia Cornille and auditor Eddy Vas highlighting its commitment.
As VRT News reported, the Jan Yperman Hospital in Ypres has become the 1st hospital in Belgium to receive the gold Cycle Friendly Employer (CFE) label, the highest European award for bicycle-friendly workplaces.
“We provide ample secure bicycle parking, adapted racks for cargo bikes, charging stations for electric bikes, dedicated parking zones, and we even have a facility where staff can repair their bikes“,
explains director Cientia Cornille.
How did Ypres’ Jan Yperman become Belgium’s first gold CFE hospital?
Auditor Eddy Vas said the hospital stood out for its efforts to inform and inspire employees to use bicycles. He explained that infrastructure is a one-time cost, but communication and campaigns need continuous investment. The hospital has chosen to commit resources to long-term awareness and HR-led programs.
The Jan Yperman Hospital in Ypres is working to keep cycling an active part of daily life for its employees. Laura Candale, who promotes cycling policy at the hospital, said the theme is included in every staff newsletter with articles on safety, advice, and cycling stories.
The hospital also links its cycling campaigns to wider events such as Fluo Day. In winter, the hospital organises a competition that rewards the employee who covers the most cycling kilometres, ensuring that the activity continues throughout the year.
“I’m glad the efforts are paying off,”
says Candale.
“Half of our staff comes to work by bike at least once a week, and that’s good. It gives them a fresh start to their workday. Cycling is simply good for your health and the environment.”
Electrical engineer Brecht Lamaire is one of the employees who takes part in the hospital’s cycling policy. He cycles 25 kilometres to work and 25 kilometres back home each day, covering 50 kilometres in total. He explained that the hospital’s secure bike sheds and shower facilities make it easier to maintain this routine.
The Cycle Friendly Employer (CFE) label was launched in 2017 by the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) to encourage workplaces across Europe to support and promote cycling. In Belgium, the program is managed by the Cyclists’ Union (Fietsersbond), which audits organisations on infrastructure, safety, communication, and long-term policy.
Employers can earn a bronze, silver, or gold rating, with gold representing the highest standard. As of 2024, more than 100 Belgian employers have obtained the CFE label, but only a small number have achieved gold. On August 30, 2024, the Jan Yperman Hospital in Ypres became the first hospital in Belgium to receive the gold label.
