Wevelgem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The incident occurred when a truck crashed into a residential garage in Moorsele, which is situated near Wevelgem, on Thursday evening. In an attempt to save himself, the driver swerved his vehicle, which ultimately caused him to lose steering control.
The truck driver sought to prevent impact by swerving to escape a nearby vehicle but ended up spinning out of control before crashing into a residential building in Moorsele, which borders Wevelgem. The driver named Michael, lost control of his steering wheel during the incident, thus causing his truck to crash into a nearby dwelling. The elderly woman and her husband, aged 88, managed to stay unharmed while their home received extensive damage.
The accident took place on Maalstraat which has narrow country road conditions while drivers commonly exceed speed limits on it. During his interview Michael expressed surprise after a vehicle with a black-and-white license plate unexpectedly appeared before him.
“I reflexively threw my steering wheel over, but I hit a culvert in the ditch on the side of the road. That’s probably why my right front wheel broke off. I couldn’t steer or brake anymore,”
He explained.
The elderly couple, who were watching TV at the time, heard a loud crash. The 88-year-old woman recounted,
“When I came outside, I thought our entire house had collapsed. I was very shocked, of course. I had to take a sleeping pill to be able to sleep.”
Maalstraat, where the accident took place, is known for its narrow layout and frequent speeding issues. Michael, the driver, mentioned,
“I live a bit further away and know that people often drive too fast on this street.”
The collision caused extensive damage to the garage and surrounding property, though no injuries were reported. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in the area, particularly on narrow streets where high speeds can lead to dangerous situations.
What are the broader concerns surrounding the incident?
The truck accident in Moorsele near Wevelgem demonstrates the existing security risks on small country roads like Maalstraat. The minimal visibility conditions and restricted space features of these roads produce environments that easily generate safety hazards when drivers engage in speed violations.
Residents of the area have repeatedly pointed out vehicle speed problems because fast-moving traffic creates hazardous conditions, particularly during unexpected road blockages or vehicle intersections. These types of incidents show the necessity for enhanced residential zone traffic safety protocols that would stop similar episodes moving forward.
