Wemmel (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Wemmel closed its library, cafeteria, and public spaces after bedbugs were found in 4 areas at Residence Geurts. Mayor Walter Vansteenkiste and Alderman Erwin Olivier will lead inspections on November 2, 2025.

As VRT News reported, Wemmel, in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium, has closed its library and other public spaces after bedbugs were found in senior housing. The insects were discovered in 3 apartments and a service room at Residence Geurts. Officials mentioned that bedbugs feed on human blood and hide in luggage, clothing, bedding, and furniture. They do not spread disease, but their bites cause itching and swelling.

What is Wemmel doing after bedbugs were found in 4 residences in Geurts?

The municipality has launched an action plan to deal with the infestation. Professional exterminators will treat the affected apartments and common areas. Nearby apartments will be inspected to prevent further spread. Residents are being informed about how to identify bedbugs and how to keep luggage, clothing, and furniture safe.

“We don’t want to take any risks,”

says Mayor Walter Vansteenkiste (LB Wernmel).

Alderman for Communications Erwin Olivier (LB Wemmel) said a specialised team will carry out the investigation on Sunday, November 2nd, 2025. Until the inspection is finished, several public areas will remain closed as a precaution.

The residence’s cafeteria and restaurant will stay closed, and the town library will also temporarily suspend its services. Olivier confirmed that the civil affairs office and the daycare centre will remain open because they are considered to have a low risk of infestation.

“We are keeping residents, staff, and parents of the daycare centre well-informed about the situation,”

says Mayor Walter Vansteenkiste (LB Wernmel).

Résidence Geurts, located in Wemmel, is a senior living complex that includes 168 independent living apartments. It is operated by the local CPAS. On September 9th, 2018, the park was renovated and reopened as a community space. The renovation aimed to provide residents and members of the community with a green, safe space while fostering activities in the community.
