Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – In recognition of her contribution to unification in Europe, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has won a top prize.

The Ursula von der Leyen received the prize for

“her services to the unity of the Member States, in the prevention of the pandemic, for the unity of the Union’s determination to protect itself against Russia — and for the momentum towards the Green Deal,”

The award’s board of directors stated.

“She personifies Europe. She is the strong voice of Europe on the world’s stage. She is the one with the resilience to represent the interests of Europe and its allies in these historic times,”

They noted.

What is the significance of the Charlemagne prize?

The International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen is the most important distinction for personalities and institutions who made outstanding contributions toward the unification of Europe. It was first awarded in 1950 in memory of Charlemagne, often called the “Father of Europe,” since he had given the most outstanding impulse to European history. This prize fosters European unification and cooperation by honouring work that contributes to mutual understanding between European nations.

The Charlemagne Prize is considered a symbol of commitment to the integration and cooperation of Europe. It emphasizes mutual respect and shared values among diverse cultures within Europe. The prize aims not only to honour past achievements but also to inspire efforts toward unity and peace on the continent.
