Turnhout (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Turnhout police conducted a traffic check on Thursday, Aug 21, 2025, with Customs and Flemish tax authorities, stopping 272 vehicles, uncovering uninsured cars, invalid inspections, registration issues, and collecting €928 in fines.
As GVA News reported, the regional police of Turnhout conducted a traffic check on Thursday, Aug 21, 2025, with support from Customs and the Flemish tax authorities. The action was carried out on Steenweg op Merksplas and Noord-Brabantlaan.
A total of 272 vehicles were stopped for inspection. Officers checked documents, registration, and insurance. 2 cars, one Belgian and one foreign, did not have a valid inspection certificate. Another vehicle was found without insurance.
What violations did Turnhout police uncover during recent traffic checks?
Police also stopped a resident from Belgium driving a car not registered in Belgium. The Turnhout traffic check also revealed several other violations. Police fined a motorcyclist for not wearing the required protective clothing.
One person received an out-of-court settlement for illegal possession of a weapon. A driver with a damaged license was given a warning. Another motorist with an outdated license and the owner of a car with a poorly legible license plate were also warned.
Customs officers were also active during the operation. They collected €928 in criminal fines. One driver was fined €500 for using red diesel, which is only allowed for industrial or agricultural purposes.
A similar large-scale traffic inspection took place in Turnhout on April 29, 2024. The local police, in collaboration with Customs and the Flemish Tax Administration, conducted a comprehensive control along Steenweg op Merksplas.
During this operation, 725 vehicles were inspected, resulting in the collection of thousands of euros in overdue taxes and fines. Additionally, 12 vehicles with outstanding fines for fiscal fraud were intercepted, totalling €7,697. Customs officers scanned 4,250 vehicles, identifying several with red diesel in their tanks, leading to €2,561 in unpaid fines being noted.
