Turnhout (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Turnhout police increased patrols near Panorama Zomerbar after 8 e-bikes were stolen using a “Polish key,” which can open strong U-locks. Cyclists are urged to secure their bikes with multiple locks.

As VRT News reported, Turnhout police increased patrols near the Panorama Zomerbar on Saturday after 8 electric bikes were reported stolen. The thefts took place near the popular summer bar on Uitbreidingstraat, which is close to the Dessel-Schoten canal.

They mentioned that this area is a popular spot, especially when the weather is good, attracting many people. The thieves specifically targeted electric bikes, leading to worry among locals and visitors. The police increased their presence in response to the thefts.

How can cyclists protect e-bikes from “Polish Key” thefts?

Following the bike thefts, the police increased patrols around the summer bar and nearby streets. They watched for any suspicious activity to stop more thefts. The police wanted to catch the thieves and show people they were taking action.

Police believe the bike thieves used a “Polish key” to steal the bikes. This key is a special tool that can open many different locks. It can even open the U-locks that people use to protect their bikes. Because U-locks are considered very secure, the police are concerned.

Police mentioned that the Polish key lets the thieves open the locks fast and quietly. They don’t need to break the locks or make a lot of noise. This makes it easier for them to steal bikes without anyone noticing.

They suggest locking your bike frame and wheels to something strong like a bike rack or a pole. Use a chain or cable lock too. They mentioned that this makes it harder for thieves to steal your bike quickly.
