Dendermonde (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Roadworks on Oude Vest in Dendermonde start on April 22, 2025, with new traffic routes. The Mechelse Poort junction is being revamped, including tunnels for cyclists, set to finish by summer 2026.
There will be changes to traffic in Dendermonde starting April 22nd, 2025. According to the officials, roadworks on Oude Vest are entering a new phase. Drivers will need to use a new one-way route to get to Oude Vest. They can access Oude Vest from the Noordlaan or Sint-Jacobsstraat. There are special routes for residents and businesses to leave the shopping street.
They mentioned that Papiermolenstraat will be a one-way street for a while. This guides traffic towards Oude Vest. There is a new entrance from Noordlaan through the Groene Dender car park. This new entrance is for large vehicles.
How will Dendermonde’s Oude Vest and Mechelse Poort projects impact traffic?
Oude Vest in Dendermonde is getting a makeover. The project is happening in stages to make sure there’s less disruption. It will take 2 years to complete. The project includes 6 stages of construction. Each stage focuses on a different part of the street. The project includes changes to traffic flow.
The section between Lindanusstraat and Brusselsestraat will become a pedestrian zone. This will make it easier to walk in the area. The city has also added more parking spaces. There’s a new parking facility under Hof van Saeys. The city also implemented a new system to help drivers find parking.
Authorities stated that the first of 3 bike tunnels has been fitted. This occurred over the Easter break in April 2025. The initial phase began in August 2024 and was meant to be completed in March 2025. The tunnel under the Noordlaan was installed using a special method called ‘inschuiven’.
They mentioned that this way, there was less disruption to traffic. This is especially important during busy times like the Easter holidays. They said that when it’s finished, the tunnel will give cyclists and pedestrians a safe way to cross under the Noordlaan.
There will be 3 tunnels built under the Noordlaan, Leopoldlaan, and Martelarenlaan. Officials mentioned that these tunnels will help people who walk and bike get across the roads without having to cross with cars. There will also be a big space for bikes called a “bicycle plaza”.
The plaza will be 22 meters by 25 meters. The tunnels and paths will be made wider to make it easier for people to bike. There will also be special lanes for cars that don’t have traffic lights. The whole project will take about 2 years to finish and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026.
