Tienen (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Tienen Carnival starts Saturday, February 28, 2025, at 2:33 PM, marking the Hageland season. The mayor will give the city keys to the organizers. Leader Marcelle Saene seeks more funding (€6,500). Tribute planned for Mizze. Safety rules updated.

Tienen is preparing for its annual carnival. The carnival will begin this Saturday, February 28, 2025, at 2:33 PM. There will be many floats in the parade. The parade marks the start of the carnival season in the Hageland region. The mayor will give the city keys to the carnival organizers.

According to officials, this is a tradition. The organizers are in charge of the carnival. This year is special because it is the new mayor’s first carnival. The carnival organizers will meet with the mayor on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. They will explain everything about the ceremony.

The carnival organizers are also worried about funds. They want to ask the mayor for more money to help pay for the carnival. Organizers mentioned that the carnival costs more money every year. It is getting harder to pay for the carnival.

The organizers want to say that they put a lot of their own money into the carnival. The carnival is a big tradition in the city. It is part of the history of the medieval county of Brunengeruz. The city and the organizers want to make sure the carnival is successful. They want to keep the carnival going.

But I will also plead for more subsidy,

Saene says.

Everything has become more expensive, the material, but also the float that we book is more expensive. While our allowance of 6,500 euros has remained the same for years. We certainly cannot get by with that, we invest a lot of money in it ourselves. So it could be a bit more.

Will Tienen Carnival honour Mizze and extend the funfair?

According to officials, this year’s Tienen Carnival will include a special moment of remembrance for “Mizze,” the late husband of Marcelle Saene. Mizze was a devoted carnival enthusiast who played a significant role in the festivities, and his absence will be deeply felt by the community.

Officials mentioned that to honour his memory, a memorial register will be available for attendees to sign, allowing them to leave messages of remembrance and appreciation. They said that a photo of Mizze will also be displayed as a tribute, giving people a chance to reflect on his contributions to the event.

“We ask the supervisors next to the floats to move away from the float and the children and smoke behind the spectators,” says Saen.

Officials are asking people to not smoke near the floats because they are made of things that can easily catch fire. They want people to smoke away from the floats and kids, behind where the people are watching.  Some people want the carnival to last longer.

The funfair part of the carnival ends early on Sunday, March 2, 2025.  The people who run the funfair want to stay open one more day until Monday, March 3, 2025. The city leader, Alderman Werner Sabo, wants to make this happen for next year’s carnival.
