Hasselt (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): Two suspects tried to buy a €1,000 Paysafe card in Hasselt. Arrested on R71, police found cash and a hidden bank card linked to a fraud victim.

At a petrol station on Kuringersteenweg in Hasselt, two people tried to buy a Paysafe card for €1,000. Since Paysafe cards are used for secure online payments, buying a large amount seemed suspicious. A concerned witness noticed this and called the police because they thought something was wrong.

How did police capture suspects linked to €1,000 Paysafe card fraud?

After the report, two suspects drove away from the petrol station to avoid getting caught. However, the police acted quickly and stopped their vehicle on the R71 road near Hasselt. The suspects were arrested, and the police managed the situation.

During a routine vehicle inspection, authorities discovered a large amount of cash, several bank card readers, and multiple mobile phones, raising suspicions of criminal activity. A more thorough search of the two individuals revealed that one suspect had hidden a bank card in his shoe, further linking them to possible fraud. At the same time, the real owner of the hidden bank card had reported being a victim of fraud. This connection strengthened the case against the suspects. With the evidence collected from the vehicle and the concealed bank card, authorities were able to link the suspects directly to the ongoing fraud investigation.

The victim received a call from someone pretending to be a bank employee, and then another person showed up at her house to collect her bank card and its code. After giving this information, she realized money was missing from her account. Investigators later found that one suspect had used a fake name and was in the country illegally. The cash discovered was returned to the victim.
