Belgium (The Brussels Morning newspaper): The Flemish government will decide on recognizing the recent storm damage as a disaster. If recognized, affected individuals can claim compensation, though not all damages may be covered.
It has been reported that according to the insurance people, about 20,000 houses and 1,100 cars were destroyed in a big storm on Tuesday, 9th July. Places like Antwerp, Flemish Brabant, Brussels, and the coastal areas of West Flanders got hit badly with strong winds, heavy rain, and hail. According to the government, if your stuff got damaged in Flanders during the storm, you had until Saturday, 7th September, to tell the Flemish Disaster Fund about it.
Will the Flemish government recognize recent storms as a disaster?
It has been said that they will check if the weird weather in a place is considered a natural disaster based on what people say. They will consider the suggestions of weather experts from the Royal Meteorological Institute and the Flemish Environment Agency. The entire process is likely to take four to five months. In this way, the Flemish government decides whether it regards this as a disaster. People who did report damage can then request money to help along with their losses. Not all storm damage is paid for by the government.
