Kortrijk (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Over 8,000 attended the Special Olympics opening in Kortrijk, with 3,500 athletes competing. Princess Astrid and Mayor Ruth Vandenberghe highlighted inclusion, bravery, and community spirit.
As VRT News reported, over 8,000 people attended the grand opening of the Special Olympics at the Lange Munte in Kortrijk. The ceremony began with the Torch Run, a symbolic event that started at the historic Broeltorens. In this run, 150 athletes participated, carrying the Olympic flame through the city.
As evening approached, the crowd gathered at the square. The Torch Run concluded around 8 PM, with boxer Victor Schelstrate and Special Olympics gymnast Blanche Decorte lighting the Olympic flame. This act marked the official opening of the Game.

According to officials, Romeo gave a fun performance. Then, the mayor of Kortrijk, Ruth Vandenberghe, spoke to the audience. She shared how proud the city was to host the games. She also talked about how important it is to include everyone and celebrate sports. The mayor gave a special shout-out to one of the athletes, recognising their hard work.
“The school for special secondary education De Hoge Kouter is here with 60 athletes, and that deserves an extra round of applause. They have been a permanent fixture at the National Games for years!”

Princess Astrid attended the opening of the National Games in Kortrijk from May 29 to 31, 2025. During the event, she delivered a speech emphasising Belgium’s dedication to inclusion. She stated that in Belgium, everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Her words highlighted the country’s commitment to providing opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.
Following her speech, Princess Astrid officially opened the Games. A significant part of the ceremony featured the Special Olympics motto:
“Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
Over 3d days, about 3,500 athletes will compete in 20 sports. These athletes have mental disabilities. They will play sports like running, swimming, and basketball. Officials mentioned that the Games are about celebrating talent and never giving up.
