Hasselt (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A traffic incident on Sint-Truidersteenweg occurred after vehicles pursued each other around Hasselt until they collided beside the Fashion Store.

The Sint-Truidersteenweg witnessed three vehicles crash following a dangerous high-speed pursuit in Hasselt near a fashion store. The incident took place on Saturday morning as two cars raced through the city centre until they reached Grote Ring. Three vehicles took part in the accident because one was involved in the chase alongside two others. Hospital tests showed that the third-car driver had only sustained minor injuries, so doctors discharged them. Investigators have not provided information about the driver health status of the vehicles involved in pursuing one another.

Saturday morning, 2 cars chased each other from the centre of Hasselt towards the Grote Ring.

“There was a chase between 2 vehicles this morning,”

Says Febe Coenen of the LRH police.

“They collided, and a 3rd vehicle was involved, which had nothing to do with the chase. The person in that vehicle was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.”

In the meantime, that person has been released from the hospital.

The condition of the drivers of the chasing cars is not clear.

“All other information is part of the further investigation,”

Says Coenen.

“Our teams are on site, a neighbourhood investigation will be conducted, and further investigation will be conducted together with the Limburg public prosecutor’s office.”

At the scene of the accident, the road is closed to traffic towards the intersection; you have to take a detour there.

How common are high-speed chase accidents in Hasselt?

The Hasselt area, together with the Limburg region, has experienced infrequent high-speed police chases and subsequent accidents. Traffic safety reports from the local region show that these incidents stem mostly from dangerous driving actions when drivers attempt to flee law enforcement. The government has mounted additional patrols while enforcing more stringent traffic rules to reduce drivers’ risky actions.

Heavy traffic volumes on Hasselt’s Sint-Truidersteenweg road continue to increase the risk of vehicle collisions in urban traffic zones. Available data shows that vehicle pileups result in injuries while remaining a relatively infrequent cause of death. Various organisations continually work to improve road safety while conducting awareness programs and strengthening police actions to diminish traffic accidents.
