Russia hit city of Kyiv, Sumy with drone attacks

Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Ukrainian officials said that overnight Russian drone attacks caused a fire in Kyiv, injuring a woman and impairing several houses in the city of Sumy.

The Ukrainian defence authorities claimed that it had intercepted 61 out of 83 drones with 22 more likely destroyed by electronic warfare.

As reported by Reuters, the pictures posted by the emergency services from the site revealed cars engulfed in fire next to a high-rise building with impaired windows. The emergency services expressed the attack knocked out more than 300 windows and initiated the evacuation of 65 residents from the harmed homes. 

How does Russia continue its drone strikes in Ukraine?

Since 2022, Russia has started its drone attack on Kyiv, waging a war on Ukraine. From the start, the two countries have largely become drone-borne adversaries.

On January 1, 2025, A Russian drone attack on Kyiv killed at least two people and injured six others. The strike damaged buildings in two districts and partially destroyed floors of a residential building. 

In subsequent weeks, especially around the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth days same month, witnessed another wave of deadly assaults claiming lives and damaging structures, including private homes and commercial establishments alike.

On January 24-25, Another overnight Russian drone attack near Kyiv left three dead and one injured. The strike hit a ten-storey apartment building and damaged several houses. The use of drones continuously has caused massive civilian casualties and damage to residential areas across Ukraine. The psychological impact is also grave because residents are constantly threatened by these attacks that come with so much unpredictability.
