Rumst (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Rumst Park and Ride is now fully fladged Hoppinput by Lantis, featuring raised bus platforms, 32 bike spaces, and guidance for the visually impaired; Bart Van Camp and Geert Antonio highlight improved sustainable travel.
As VRT News reported, the Park and Ride in Rumst, in the province of Antwerp, Belgium, has been turned into a full Hoppinpunt. The upgrade is part of the Oosterweel connection project and is carried out by Lantis.
The bus stops have raised platforms to make getting on and off the bus easier for everyone. Guidelines have been added for blind and visually impaired passengers. The renovated stops are already open. Shelters will be installed later this year on both sides to protect travellers from rain and wind. The Hoppinpunt now has 2 bicycle shelters with 32 covered parking spaces.
How is the Rumst Hoppinpunt improving sustainable travel and commuting?
Bart Van Camp, Director of Environment at Lantis, says the new Hoppinpunt in Rumst makes it easier for travellers to leave their cars at home. The upgraded site encourages people to use sustainable transport like buses or shared electric bicycles. Van Camp explains that these changes may seem small, but they have a big impact on daily commuting.
“At this Hoppinpunt, residents can easily transfer and it has been designed to be accessible. This is how we are working towards sustainable mobility in Rumst,”
adds Alderman for Mobility Geert Antonio (N-VA).
Lantis is also investing in sustainable mobility across the Antwerp transport region. The plans include expanding the Park and Ride network, building accessible bus stops, improving cycle paths, and increasing the number of electric shared bicycles.
Belgium is also experiencing many similar projects to the new Hoppinpunt in Rumst. The first Hoppinpunt in Mechelen opened in July 2024 at Parking Keerdok, with 516 parking spaces, electric vehicle parking spaces, shared cars, bicycles, scooters, and a weekend boat shuttle to the city centre.
In Leuven, the Hoppinpunt was at Parking Vaartkom and has been in operation since 2022, with car and bicycle parking and free weekend bus shuttle service into the historic city centre. The project is part of a larger project to create more than 1,000 Hoppinpunten in Flanders.
