Aalst (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): A 27-year-old man in Aalst received an 8-year prison sentence and a lifetime driving ban after being convicted of over 30 traffic violations and driving without a license on 39 occasions. He faces a total fine of 64,000 euros.

A 27-year-old man, who is currently in jail because of a past crime, faced serious legal problems for not going to his court hearing in Aalst. Because he didn’t show up, he was found guilty in his absence for several offenses, mainly for at least 30 traffic violations like speeding. These violations were caught by ANPR cameras, which automatically record the license plates of cars breaking the law.

How did a 27-year-old in Aalst receive an 8-year sentence?

In this case, the court gave him a punishment, a 4-year prison sentence that he must serve completely, with no chance of getting out early. He also received a lifetime driving ban, meaning he can’t drive any vehicle forever. On top of that, he has to pay a fine of 32,000 euros. Authorities mentioned that this shows how serious his repeated traffic offenses are and sends a strong message to people who keep breaking the law about the dangers they pose to public safety.

After his earlier traffic violations, the 27-year-old man was looked at closely by the police again for more offenses. He was found guilty of driving without a license and insurance 39 times. These repeated mistakes showed that he didn’t care about traffic laws, which led the authorities to seek harsher punishments.

In a later decision, the court gave him a total prison sentence of 8 years, combining the sentences from both cases because of how serious and frequent his offenses were.  Along with this, he was fined 64,000 euros, which is double the earlier fine. It has been said that this strong punishment shows that the legal system is serious about dealing with repeat offenders and wants to stop similar behavior in the future to make the roads safer for everyone.
