Leuven (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Renovation of Leuven’s Oude Sluismolen began in 2025 by VMM and the city, led by Alderman Dirk Vansina, focusing on structural repairs, vegetation removal, and adding a steel roof and canopy by June 2026.

As VRT News reported, renovation work has started on the Oude Sluismolen at Sluispark in Leuven. The project is being carried out by the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) and the city of Leuven.

Dirk Vansina (CD&V), Alderman for Monuments and Immovable Heritage in Leuven, outlined the restoration plans for the Oude Sluismolen. He mentioned that the work will focus on stabilising and repairing the remaining structure of the historic mill.

What are the renovation plans for Leuven’s Oude Sluismolen?

Contractors will start by removing overgrown vegetation to secure the site and prevent further damage. They will repair the damaged brickwork, restore the quay walls and bulkheads along the Dyle River, and rebuild the stairs and the platform that had collapsed.

The renovation is scheduled to be completed by June 2026. A steel-pitched roof and a canopy will be added to connect the mill with Sluispark. The canopy will also provide shade for visitors and the nearby water playground.

“The Sluismolen will soon form a beautiful link between Sluispark and the Dile River,”

concludes Alderman Vansina.

The mill has been an important part of the city since the 12th century. It served as a grain mill, a bridge, and a lock, connecting the 2 banks of the Dyle River. Over the centuries, it played a major role in trade and daily life in Leuven.

The Oude Sluismolen has been damaged many times, mostly by floods. By the 20th century, only the concrete lock section was left. Even this section fell into further decay over time. The renovation will stabilise the remaining structure and integrate it into Sluispark. The project preserves a key part of Leuven’s medieval history.
