How is RedBall transforming Genk’s cultural scene?
On 21st August the RedBall is displayed on top of one of the pit heads at C-mine in Genk. This installation is part of the summer exhibition called “Any Way the Wind Blows” at the mine site. Mayor Wim Dries (CD&V) mentioned that the RedBall is a great addition to the exhibition and fits well with its themes. Dries highlighted how important the RedBall is noting that it is the longest-traveling street art piece in the world. He feels proud to have it in Genk especially because it has been to many big cities around the world. Putting the RedBall at C-mine adds a unique artistic element to the site making the cultural experience better for both visitors and locals.
Alderman Anniek Nagels (CD&V) joked that Genk is now a world city thanks to the RedBall which aims to bring art to the people and encourage conversations among residents. Artist Kurt Perschke mentioned that the ball’s presence will get different reactions from people making it a unique artwork that includes the ball, its surroundings and the viewers. People can see the ball today in the shaft until 5 PM and it will be at different locations in the coming days including a youth center and Cinema Victoria before returning to C-mine on Sunday.
