Doha (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Qatar plans to hold funerals in the capital Doha on Thursday for those killed in an unusual Israeli strike that targeted Hamas leaders in the Gulf country earlier this week.

“The Ministry of Interior announces that the funeral prayer for the martyrs of the Israeli targeting… will be held on the afternoon of Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque, and they will be buried in the Mesaimeer Cemetery,”

It said in a statement on X.

Israel launched an airstrike against Hamas leaders in Qatar on Tuesday, expanding its military actions that have ranged across the Middle East to include the Gulf Arab state where the Palestinian Islamist group has long had its political base.

As reported, Qatar’s prime minister appeared visibly angry as he called the attack “state terrorism” at a press conference. “This sends a clear message to the entire region: that there’s a rogue player at work,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani said.

How many were killed in Israel’s Doha airstrike?

Although the group claimed its top officials escaped unharmed, five members were killed, and a Qatari security force member died in the attack. Those killed were top negotiator Khalil al-Hayya’s son, Human, as well as his office director, Jihad Labad, and bodyguards Ahmad Mamlouk, Abdallah Abdelwahd, and Mumen Hassoun. Qatari Lance Corporal Saad Mohammed al-Humaidi al-Dosari was also killed.

How has Israel targeted Hamas leaders outside Palestine before?

Israel has long conducted target strikes against Hamas leadership, not only in Gaza but across a number of countries where Hamas political and military members have settled.

In January 2024, Israel killed Saleh Arouri, a senior member of Hamas, in Lebanon while he was coordinating activities for Hamas from overseas. This assassination was one of the first high-profile assassinations of Hamas leadership outside of the Palestinian territories since the Hamas-led attack on Israel in 2023.
