Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – New European Council President António Costa has sent an invitation letter to all the members of the European Council for his first European Council meeting as President of the European Council.
As reported by the press of the European Council, the president said: “I am delighted to invite you to my first European Council meeting as President of the European Council, which will be taking place on Thursday 19 December, as well as to the EU-Western Balkans Summit on Wednesday 18 December, both in Brussels.”
He said that the situation in Ukraine would be at the forefront of their discussions. He mentioned that he had just returned from a visit to Kyiv on the first day of his mandate. He emphasized the need to stand with Ukraine for as long as necessary and to do whatever it takes for Russia’s invasion to be defeated and international law to prevail.
António Costa said that he had invited President Zelenskyy to come to Brussels on the occasion of the European Council meeting to share with them the latest developments on the ground and his views on how Europe could best support Ukraine.
He added that “EU in the world” would be another main theme for their December meeting. He believed that they needed a comprehensive and strategic discussion, without written conclusions, on the way forward regarding their global engagement and priorities in a multipolar landscape marked by geopolitical tensions.
