Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has issued a firm response to reports of proposed U.S peace plan for Ukraine, particularly criticizing a reported provision that suggests the deployment of NATO aircraft in Poland. Speaking out on social media, Tusk firmly asserted Poland’s absolute sovereignty over its security decisions and stressed that no peace deal for conflict could be negotiated without Kyiv’s full involvement.
Sovereignty First: “Nothing About Us Without Us”
According to various media outlets, a point within the reported multi-point peace plan- said to be aimed at ending Russia’s war in Ukraine suggest that European fighter jets would be stationed in Poland as part of broader security guarantees for Ukraine The Proposal reportedly generated surprise in Warsaw as polish authorities were not consulted on the details of the draft.
In response Prime Minister Tusk invoked a core diplomatic principle, asserting Poland’s exclusive right to determine its defense and security posture.
He wrote:
“ All decisions concerning Poland will be taken by Poles. Nothing about us without us.”
Tusk’s comment underscores that any changes or deployment of military assets on Polish soil must be a sovereign decision made by the Polish government.
Demanding Ukraine’s place at the table
Beyond the matter of Polish security the Prime Minister reiterated Warsaw’s longstanding and unwavering stance Ukraine must be an active and willing participant in any negotiations aimed at ending Russia’s War. Poland has been one of Ukraine’s most dedicated allies since the full scale invasion began in 2022.
The Prime Minister made it clear that a piece forced upon the Kyviv is unacceptable to Poland firmly stating:
“When it comes to peace, all the negotiations should include Ukraine. Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.”
The Dual Declaration of sovereignty for Poland and self-determination for Ukraine signals Warsaw’s strong resistance to any deal perceived to be unfavorable to Kyiv or that compromises Polish national interest. Other Polish officials including the Defense Minister have echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that a just peace is impossible without Ukraine’s explicit consent thus maintaining that Russia cannot be allowed to dictate the terms for a resolution in Europe.
