West Flanders public prosecutors started an investigation following an unclear incident that occurred in Passendale beside Zonnebeke, which left a 67-year-old person seriously hurt on the street. Medical crews transported the man to the hospital after the incident occurred at 2:30 am when he remained in a critical state. The authorities are investigating all known details from the event.

The emergency services received notification about a 67-year-old male victim with severe injuries at Graventafelstraat in Passendale during the night transition from Sunday to Monday. They located the man near café De Mosselmarkt at the Haringe- and Mosselmarktstraat street intersection. The street suffered a temporary shutdown because experts conducted an investigation. Personnel, both from the traffic expert initiative and forensic specialists, studied traces at the site. When emergency services woke the café owner, he answered,

“I have no idea what occurred in front of my front door.”

What is the history behind the incident in Passendale?

The small Belgian town of Passendale, located in West Flanders, holds prominent significance because of its participation in World War I, especially through the intense Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. The location near Zonnebeke features both its rural calmness and historical significance.

The recent accident site located at Graventafelstraat remains a busy local business district that houses café De Mosselmarkt. Major traffic incidents were almost non-existent in this area until the recent unexpected incident occurred. Haringe- and Mosselmarktstraat have seldom experienced heavy traffic because they stand at a quiet crossroads.

The emergency medical services in Passendale maintain good equipment levels, although serious incidents like this seldom occur. The residents of this tight-knit community expressed concern about the unknown elements of the accident, which led to a meticulous examination by the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office.
