Eeklo (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Over 2,000 people attended Geert Faes’s funeral in Eeklo. He died at 53, supported cancer causes, worked at AVS and VRT, taught at College Ten Door, and organised the Herbakkersfestival.

As VRT News reported, more than 2,000 people from Eeklo and nearby towns gathered today, Dec 27, 2025, to say goodbye to Geert Faes.

“He was a positive, optimistic, and always happy man with remarkable and fun initiatives,”

say many who knew him.

What made Geert Faes a beloved figure in media, education, and culture?

The funeral of Geert Faes lasted more than 2 hours. The entire service was written by Faes himself. The service was full of music and moments of gratitude for what he had lived. During the opening speech, all attendees were asked to sing together, “so Geert can hear it.”

Radio 2 presenter Peter Van de Veire was also in funeral. He had known Geert Faes since school and worked with him later at AVS. Van de Veire shared memories of their time and spoke about Faes on Facebook after his death. He highlighted the friendship they shared and the impact Faes had on those around him.

53 years old, Faes died from Cancer. He is remembered as an advocate for those touched by cancer, as he was the first to be the patron of the Eeklo Relay for Life. Faes also supported “Kom op tegen Kanker” through his participation in the 24-hour roller skating event multiple times over a number of years. His commitment to both of these charitable causes raised money and awareness for those affected by cancer.

Faes was involved in Media, Education, and Culture for many years. After beginning his professional career at AVS (a regional broadcaster), where he earned the nickname “Geert te Peerd”, he went on to produce short films for VRT. Then, after several years as an educator teaching Special Education, he became the spokesperson of College Ten Door. Faes was a musical performer and an organiser of the Herbakkersfestival.
