Officers injured in ammonia attack during Brussels robbery

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Two off-duty police officers in Brussels intervened during a robbery on Wildewoudstraat at 7:15 p.m. One officer was injured by ammonia sprayed by a suspect, requiring hospitalization. The Brussels prosecutor’s office is investigating the incident, praising the officers’ bravery.

On 10th October around 7:15 p.m. in the center of Brussels, two off-duty police officers saw a robbery happening on Wildewoudstraat. They quickly went to help a woman who was being robbed. When the suspects tried to run away, one officer chased after them to catch them. During the chase, one of the suspects sprayed the officer with ammonia, which is a dangerous chemical that can cause serious irritation.

What risks do off-duty police officers face during emergencies?

Even after the attack, the officers’ quick response helped keep the robbery victim safe and alert local authorities. Yasmina Vanoverschelde from the Brussels public prosecutor’s office confirmed the incident and praised the officers for their bravery. He mentioned that this situation shows the risks that police officers face, even when they are off duty, as they continue to protect the public in dangerous situations.

The officer was injured during the incident and taken to the hospital for treatment. Because of the seriousness of the injuries, he was unable to return to work for about a month. The Brussels public prosecutor’s office was quickly notified and launched an investigation to find the suspects and gather more details about the event.
