Ninove town crier Hans Van Laethem dies at 65

Ninove (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Hans Van Laethem, honorary citizen and beloved town crier of Ninove, has died unexpectedly at 65, leaving the community in mourning.

He was sixty-five. Van Laethem became a global, European, and Belgian champion while serving as the town crier. In addition, he was a municipal honorary citizen.

Ninove shared the surprise farewell on social media. For over thirty years, Hans Van Laethem served as the town crier for his community. 

Previously serving as the town crier’s official broadcaster, the role has since been reduced to folklore. His distinctive voice began a number of ceremonies and events. “Attention, attention, attention” was his go-to phrase every time.

He established a career outside of Ninove, Belgium, as well. He was crowned the town criers’ European champion in 2002. 

He even took the European championship to Ninove in 2004 and went on to win the global title the following year. Among his accomplishments is the Belgian title.

He became a Ninove honorary citizen. Hansken Den Belleman, his own giant, was also given to him.

“We immortalized him because there is no more colorful and better ambassador for our city than Hans,”

It was said at the time. In recent years, Van Laethem lived in Revin, just across the border in France.

Former mayor and current municipal councillor Tania De Jonge (Positief Ninove) already responded to the death.

“The loudest voice in our city has fallen silent. Hans had a heart of gold. With his enthusiasm, his warm personality and his unconditional love for our city he knew how to touch and connect people. We wish his family and friends much strength in this difficult time,”

How will Ninove honor Hans Van Laethem’s legacy as a town crier?

Ninove intends to preserve Hans Van Laethem’s memory as a significant cultural personality and municipal ambassador in order to respect his legacy as town crier. 

Recognizing his achievements as town crier with formal accolades or silent times during civic festivities.

Erecting a monument or commemorative plaque at a noticeable spot in Ninove to honor his accomplishments at the world championship and decades of service.

promoting the continuation of Ninove’s town crier position in light of Van Laethem’s commitment, either by educating heirs or creating a yearly celebration in his memory.

Presenting official declarations or honorary awards after his passing to recognize his contribution to Ninove culture.
