Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A new team of European Union commissioners took office, headed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who is in her second term.
European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen started her first term in 2019 with the culmination of the global climate movement, which resulted in a package of groundbreaking EU climate and environmental regulations known as the Green Deal. The European Parliament on 27 Nov 2024 endorsed the new College of Commissioners took office on 1 December. In a vote that took place in Strasbourg, Members of the European Parliament gave their trust to the new team introduced by President von der Leyen.
How will Von der Leyen’s second term shape the EU’s future?
On 1 December 2024, a new European Commission is sworn in. Re-elected for a second appointment in July, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen chairs a new College of Commissioners to produce the 2024-2029 work programme. Over the next five years, the College will operate on seven ambitious political importance to make Europe stronger, safer and fairer.
Regarding her first term, Ursula von der Leyen President of the European Commission, said: “In the last five years, Europe has shown what it can achieve when it does it together. It is time for Europe to step up collectively once again.”
The European Commission is comprised of the College of Commissioners from 27 EU countries. They are allocated responsibility for specific policy dimensions by the President. As the treaty states, each Member of the College is equal – and each Commissioner has an equal responsibility to provide the priorities. That indicates that all Commissioners must work together.
