Kobbegem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Brewery Mort Subite in Kobbegem uses 90,000 kg of Belgian cherries from Gingelom and Sint-Truiden for Kriek Lambic. Brewer Bruno Reinders also creates fruity Juicy beers like Bloody Berry.

Asa VRT News reported, every July, Brewery Mort Subite in Kobbegem, a part of Asse, in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium, has a busy time. They get 90,000 kilograms of fresh Belgian cherries. This is when they start making their famous cherry beers, Kriek Lambic and Oude Kriek Lambic.

Mort Subite buys more fresh Belgian cherries than any other brewery. They only use whole cherries, with the pits still inside. When the cherries arrive, they put them into lambic beer that’s been ageing in oak barrels.

This starts a second fermentation, which gives the beer its red colour, sour taste, and complex smell. Officials mentioned that the cherry pits are important too, as they add a subtle almond flavour.

What makes Mort Subite in Kobbegem mix tradition with trend?

In Belgium, Brewery Mort Subite makes cherry beer. They let the beer ferment in wooden barrels for months. This old way of making beer is from Pajottenland. It makes the lambic beer wild, sour, and not filtered. When October comes, the Kriek Lambic is ready to be bottled. Then, the beer goes to stores and bars in Belgium and other countries. Mort Subite uses real cherries, not fake flavours.

Mort Subite uses only Belgian cherries for its beers, like Kriek Lambic. They get the cherries from Gingelom and Sint-Truiden. Officials mentioned that these places are known for great cherries that taste sour and flavorful. The brewer, Bruno Reinders, says this year’s cherries are very good. The warm weather made the cherries sweet and full of flavour.

They add the whole cherries to old lambic beer. Then, the beer ferments again for months. This makes Mort Subite’s beers taste complex, sour, and fruity. People in Belgium and other places love these beers.

Mort Subite is trying new things with its Juicy beers for younger drinkers. Last year, they made Crime of Passion with passion fruit and herbs. This year, they made Bloody Berry with raspberry, blueberry, and blackcurrant. These beers are not like their cherry beers.

Officials mentioned that they want to make drinks that are like beer, cocktails, and pre-mixed drinks. They want to surprise people with new flavours. They want to keep the old lambic traditions and try new things to stay popular.
