Merchtem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Merchtem placed 6 large welcome signs on its main roads. Alderman Reinhoud De Bosscher (N-VA) says they highlight the town’s Flemish identity, rural charm, and cultural pride.
As VRT News reported, Merchtem, a town close to Brussels, has put up new signs at the 6 main roads leading into the area. The signs say,
“Welcome to Merchtem, Flemish municipality.”
Alderman for Flemish Affairs Reinhoud De Bosscher (N-VA) says the signs are not just there to greet people, they also show what the town stands for.
He explains that the signs reflect the pride of the people in their Flemish roots and rural way of life. Officials mentioned that they are meant to remind both locals and visitors that Merchtem values its traditions and wants to protect its identity.
What do Merchtem’s new signs say about its Flemish identity?
According to officials, Merchtem is close to Brussels and feels the pressure of a growing city. More people are moving in, and the town is changing. Some speak French instead of Dutch, which worries local leaders. Alderman De Bosscher says this is a big concern. He wants to protect the Flemish language and culture. The new signs at the town’s borders help with that.
De Bosscher says:
“Everyone is welcome here, of course, but we prioritise the Flemish character of our municipality. We want to keep it that way, despite all the challenges.”
According to officials, the new signs in Merchtem also show a picture of the local countryside. The image has green fields, small hills, and horses in open meadows. Alderman Reinhoud De Bosscher says the signs are meant to show what makes Merchtem special.
He explains that people will see open space and calm nature when they arrive. Alderman De Bosscher says the signs were made large on purpose so that drivers and visitors will notice them right away. They are not just for looks.
