Strasbourg (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – MEPs, in a resolution adopted, labelled Nicolas Maduro’s presidency in Venezuela as illegitimate and an unlawful try to remain in power by force.

European Parliament condemned the Nicolas Maduro presidency in Venezuela, and MEPs commended the democratic opposition’s resilience. The EU Parliament recognised Edmundo González Urrutia as the rightful victor of the presidential election. It said the Venezuelan government has missed a critical opportunity to respect the will of the people and ensure a transparent democratic transition of power.

MEPs urged the Venezuelan regime to cancel the unjustified arrest warrant given for Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia and asked it to publish the electoral record of the elections of 28 July 2024.

Further, voicing its full support for International Criminal Court investigations into the Venezuelan regime’s crimes, MEPs insisted the EU, its member states, and all democratic regional and international players unconditionally align “as a moral duty” with the democratic forces of Venezuela and to do their utmost to revive democracy in the country.

When did the EU Parliament recognise González Urrutia as the victor of the presidential election?

In September 2024, the European Parliament passed a resolution that declared Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia the legitimate president of Venezuela. The resolution came after a disputed election where incumbent President Nicolás Maduro claimed to have won the presidency for himself.  The claim of the presidency by Gonzalez Urrutia has been supported by the United States and follows accusations of electoral fraud orchestrated by the Maduro government.

It further denounced the actions of the regime-controlled National Electoral Council for refusing to publish the official results of the election. Gonzalez Urrutia expressed gratitude for the recognition, framing it as an acknowledgement of Venezuelans’ will. In contrast, Maduro’s government condemned the resolution as an act of aggression and a denial of democracy.
