Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – MEPs today, on January 22, 2025, discussed the conclusions of the December EU summit with Presidents Costa and von der Leyen, concentrating on Ukraine, EU-US ties and the EU’s global role.
António Costa said in his first plenary debate that EU heads of State and Government pledged
“to strengthen Ukraine’s position for every scenario. Peace must be the peace chosen by Ukraine and by Ukrainians. For the sake of Ukraine’s security. For the sake of Europe’s security.”
He endorsed the EU’s backing for Ukraine
“for as long as necessary, and whatever it takes, for a sweeping, just and lasting peace.”
Meanwhile, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed the need for Europe to adjust and adapt to the latest era of intense geostrategic competition. She stated the EU’s new “Competitiveness Compass” will concentrate on closing the innovation hole with Europe’s competitors, promoting decarbonisation and competitiveness and supporting economic resilience and security.
How did the MEPs react?
The ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages was welcomed by MEPs, with some urging a two-state solution. Many MEPs stressed the need for the EU to support its geopolitical relevancy in a world undergoing seismic shifts.
Several MEPs underlined the significance of ensuring Europe is not excluded from any peace-making measures in Ukraine, and others demanded Europe strengthen its defence abilities. In addition, a number of MEPs raised the significance of addressing illegal migration, particularly by negotiating with the matter outside the EU.
On EU-US ties, lawmakers cautioned that Europe is now a target under the Trump government, while others greeted the new US leadership. Several MEPs raised worries about European democracy being menaced by external forces, while others supported the EU’s green guidelines in light of the US’s exit from the Paris Agreement.
How did the December EU Summit address pressing issues?
Last December 2024 EU Summit-just this December 18-19-was vital regarding pressing geopolitical issues and reinforcing the strategic direction of the EU under new leadership with President António Costa. In the same respect, it also reaffirmed that the integration of the Western Balkans represents one of the main priorities for the EU and that this was also viewed as a
“strategic investment in peace and stability.”
Leaders discussed regional integration efforts and the importance of aligning with EU policies, particularly regarding democratic principles and sanctions enforcement.
