Rome (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – MEP Carolina Morace criticized Italy’s far-right for attacking LGBTQ+ rights and called for EU intervention.

Carolina Morace, an MEP for the 5 Star Movement, conveyed in a note that the Italian right is engaging in a disgraceful campaign against the LGBTQ+ community by emulating the oppressive policies of Orban’s Hungary. According to Morace, the Sasso resolution, which was approved by the Culture Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, claims that there are educational abuses in schools referred to as “gender ideology.” This, she argues, constitutes a genuine witch hunt and is evidently at odds with the principles of non-discrimination and gender equality upheld by the European Union.

What findings highlight Italy’s shortcomings in protecting LGBTQ+ communities?

Europe is failing to shield LGBTQ+ people from rising violence, according to new data, despite some legislative progress, expressed rights groups. The latest assessment published by LGBTQ+ advocacy group ILGA-Europe discovered that Poland, Italy and the Czech Republic are particularly trailing in measures to protect groups. In part, those nations lack comprehensive laws or policies against hate discourse and hate crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

An investigation by the EU’s Fundamental Rights Agency also demonstrates little improvement between 2019 and 2023 when it comes to addressing hatred and violence against LGBTQ+ communities. The number of LGBTQ+ people who underwent hate-motivated violence, including physical and sexual attacks, in the five years preceding the survey rose from 11 per cent in 2019 to 14 per cent in 2023.

What role should the European Commission play in addressing LGBTQ+ rights?

Carolina Morace highlighted the need for intervention by the European Commission and more vigilant monitoring of potential violations of LGBTQ+ rights in Italy. She emphasized that the Commission should ensure that the Meloni government meets its human rights and gender equality obligations, particularly in education.

Morace criticized the so-called gender theory as a fictitious concept used by the far right to obstruct educational programs aimed at enhancing social inclusion. She argued that, in a country suffering from high rates of femicide and homophobia, such awareness-raising courses are not only necessary but vital.
