Mechelen (Brussels Morning newspaper): Wouter Jeanfils from the Flemish Brabant West fire brigade reported 14 calls on New Year’s Eve, mostly for fireworks, amid rising concerns in Brussels.
According to Wouter Jeanfils from the Flemish Brabant West fire brigade, New Year’s Eve was mostly calm for them, with just 14 calls for assistance. Most of these were related to fireworks or small fires, which are common during the holidays. He pointed out that while this is typical for New Year’s, there has been a noticeable increase in such incidents happening in Brussels. This shift in location is becoming a growing concern for the fire brigade.
What challenges did firefighters face on New Year’s Eve in Brussels?
Jeanfils noted that even though there were more incidents in Brussels, New Year’s Eve was still manageable this year. The fire brigade received fewer calls than in previous years, making the night feel relatively calm. However, they are staying alert due to the increasing problems in Brussels and are prepared for any challenges that may arise in the future.
Firefighters were really busy in Diegem park, getting calls about fires. One fire started in a container and spread to another one nearby. There was also another fire a short distance away. It’s not certain if someone caused the fires on purpose, but having multiple fires in the same place makes people wonder. Local police helped the firefighters all night to keep them safe while they worked.
