Mechelen (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): The Battel district in Mechelen opened a 1,250 square meter dog meadow, the 14th in the city, after negotiations with NATO. Mayor Bart Somers inaugurated it for community use.
For a long time, people in the Battel district wanted a place for their dogs to play and exercise. After discussing it, the city council found two pieces of land on Neerweg that were perfect for making a dog meadow. These plots are 1,250 square meters, giving dogs plenty of space to run and have fun. It has been said that this project was a big step in meeting the community’s needs and showed that the council cares about improving facilities for pet owners.
What makes the new dog meadow in Mechelen a safe place for pets?
The dog meadow is completely fenced in, so dogs can play without the chance of escaping. This safe area lets owners feel good about letting their pets run freely. It’s also a place for dog owners to meet and socialize, making it a community spot. With this new area, the Battel district has a safe and clean place for dogs to exercise, play, and have fun.
The dog meadow was built after negotiations with NATO due to a pipeline located beneath the site, which prohibits construction. The mayor of Mechelen, Bart Somers, explained that they spoke with a NATO general, who had never been asked about such a matter before. Permission was granted to create the dog meadow with the condition that no deep digging would occur. The mayor and three aldermen officially opened the meadow on 28th September Saturday afternoon, and many dog owners brought their pets to enjoy the space. Local resident Sabina Hermoniers noted that the meadow provides ample space for dogs to play and is conveniently located for walks along the Leuvense Vaart or the Dile.
It has been said that in the upcoming weeks, they will add more benches and a picnic table to the dog meadow. This is the fourteenth dog meadow in Mechelen, and it won’t be the last one. The officials want to make sure every resident has a dog meadow nearby. They are already thinking of new places for more meadows. They will also plant trees and flowers in the area so that dogs and their owners can enjoy a nice and safe place together.
