Mechelen (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): Mechelen’s Paardenkerkhofstraat redevelopment improves parking access, with new spots on Papenhofdreef and at Lidl and SIMA. Local authorities aim to alleviate congestion and enhance residents’ mobility.

The redevelopment of Paardenkerkhofstraat in Mechelen has moved to a new stage, allowing residents to park in Kalverenstraat again. This change should help those who had trouble finding parking during the construction. However, the area still has a lot of parking pressure, with not enough spaces for all the residents. Getting in and out of the area is still tough, making it hard for locals to find parking close to their homes.

What new parking options are being introduced for residents in the district?

It has been said that to solve these parking problems, the local government is looking for more parking options. They are considering building new parking areas in the district or nearby to reduce congestion and make it easier for people to park. These efforts aim to give residents better access to parking, improving their mobility and quality of life. The city’s plan shows a commitment to balancing development with the everyday needs of the community.

We’ve made a deal with Lgemo to open 28 parking spots on Papenhofdreef for residents to use anytime. Seventy residents can park at the Lidl supermarket from 8 p.m. to 8:15 a.m., and twelve can park at the SIMA supermarket from 7:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. These spots will join the existing parking in the Papenhof Neighborhood and Kalverenstraat Park. If residents can’t get to their private garage or parking space, they can apply for a special residents’ card. By November, the road from Kalverenstraat to Vooruitgangstraat will be done, and that part of Paardenkerkhofstraat will reopen for traffic, says Alexander Vandersmissen.
