Marcinelle (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Early Thursday, July 10, 2025,  explosion on Route de Philippeville in Marcinelle damaged 3 shops and displaced 6 residents. Authorities suspect arson; the Charleroi prosecutor and fire department are investigating.

As VRT News reported, early Thursday, July 10, 2025, an explosion and fire occurred on Route de Philippeville in Marcinelle, near Charleroi, Belgium. The blast heavily damaged at least 3 businesses, and people living above the buildings had to leave.

Officials mentioned that debris from the explosion was blown hundreds of meters away, damaging the area. The firefighters arrived quickly and began to extinguish the fire, which had already spread before their arrival. The firefighters used as many resources as they could afford to keep the fire away from other buildings in the area.

What caused the Marcinelle explosion?

Officials said the blast impacted the flats above the stores more than anything else. 6 people lived there, but now they have to leave because the damage made their homes unsafe. Officials are helping them find temporary homes with support from Social Services and possibly others like the Red Cross.

Emergency teams checked for gas leaks and other dangers to keep the area safe. People in the neighborhood were told to stay away while the cleanup and investigations went on. The Charleroi prosecutor is now involved and will investigate the explosion and fire. The fire department thinks the fire might have been set on purpose.

They mentioned that if arson is confirmed, there will be a criminal investigation. Forensic teams will be investigating how the fire began. They will review security camera footage and speak with witnesses. The area remains closed off while authorities continue with their investigation and assess the damage.
