Lubbeek (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Leeuwkens Linden Scouts from Lubbeek used only solar energy at their summer camp in Chiny (Luxembourg province). Scout leader Mattias Ix said solar panels powered lights, 10 fridges, 10 freezers, showers, and toilets.
As VRT News reported, the Leeuwkens Linden Scouts from Lubbeek, a municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium, are using only solar energy at their summer camp in Chiny. The camp is in the province of Luxembourg.
They mentioned that the idea came from the father of a scout. He has a company that works with solar panels and batteries. Before, the scouts used a generator for power. Now they want to be greener and better for nature.
Their leader, Mattias Ix, said they planned everything to use only the energy they needed. The solar panels are on top of their storage containers, so they did not need extra space. The setup took time to prepare, but everything works well.
How are Leeuwkens scouts powering their camp without fuel?
According to Mattias Ix, they worked hard before the camp to plan everything. They checked how much power they would need each day. Once the setup was ready, it worked without problems. He mentioned that now the camp has no noise or smoke from a fuel generator. The scouts learned how solar energy can work well, even in a quiet place like a summer camp.
The solar panels at the Leeuwkens Linden Scouts’ camp are used for more than just lights. They give power to almost everything at the site. The energy runs a cold room, all the lights, about 10 fridges, and 10 freezers. It also powers the pumps for the showers and toilets.
Scout leader Mattias Ix said that everything needing electricity is now running on solar energy. They also have batteries to keep things running at night, or on dark, cloudy days (with no sunlight). The batteries can store spare energy collected from the day, so everything is still working.
They mentioned that with this system, the scouts now have clean and steady power during their whole camp in Chiny. They do not need fuel or a loud generator. Scout leader Mattias said there were a few small problems at the start, but that is normal when trying something new.
He mentioned that the issues were fixed quickly and did not cause big trouble. The scouts are happy and proud that their camp runs in a green and smart way. They hope that other groups will see this and try it too.
