Turnhout (Brussels Morning Newspaper): A lorry with wooden pallets overturned on the N119 near Het Zwart Water, causing traffic delays. Mayor Hannes Anaf, just three weeks in office, stressed safety issues and asked for fewer trucks on the road after oil leaked into a nearby canal.

A lorry loaded with wooden pallets overturned into a ditch on Klein Engeland near Het Zwart Water at 10:30 on Friday, 20 December. The truck, coming from the Netherlands, got stuck in the soft verge on the narrow N119. The driver was unharmed, but the accident caused significant traffic delays between Turnhout and Welde-Statie. Police closed the road completely between Noord-Brabantlaan and Kastelein and Weelde-Statie, and towing the truck took time as the pallets had to be removed first.

What actions will Mavor Hannes Anaf take after the lorry accident on N119 in Turnhout?

I’ve been mayor for three weeks and already had two accidents in Klein England. Today’s crash helped stop a possible environmental issue in the Vennengebied, said Hannes Ana from Forward. Oil leaked from the truck, so the fire department built a barrier in the canal to protect the nature reserve nearby. Civil protection also came to pump out the canal and keep the oil from reaching the area.

The new mayor of Turnout, Hannes Anaf, went to the scene of an accident and said the road was very unsafe. He pointed out that this is not the first accident on the N119. He thinks heavy trucks should not be on this narrow road because they often have to drive onto the bike path. Anaf is asking the Flemish government to reduce truck traffic in the area, especially after today’s crash, which could have caused an environmental problem.
