Mechelen (Brussels Morning Newspaper): A light truck got stuck in the Zemstbaan tunnel near Mechelen Zuid on the E19 due to height misjudgment, damaging its cargo area. The driver escaped unharmed, and police assisted with traffic management.

A light truck got stuck in a tunnel on Zemstbaan near the Mechelen Zuid exit of the E19 highway because the driver misjudged the truck’s height. While trying to pass through the tunnel, the top of the vehicle hit the low ceiling, causing a lot of damage to the cargo area. The height limit was too low for the truck, which caused the top to bend and get seriously damaged.

How did a light truck get stuck in the Zemstbaan tunnel?

The driver of the damaged truck escaped without any injuries. Local authorities quickly arrived to assess the situation and help remove the vehicle from the tunnel. The accident caused temporary traffic delays in the area, as it took time to clear the truck safely without causing more issues.

The police came to help with traffic and towed the truck away, and the bridge was fine. This isn’t the first time tall vehicles have hit the tunnel, a bus did the same thing before, even with clear height signs. Police spokesman Dirk Van de Sande said that drivers sometimes just follow their GPS and don’t see the signs, or they rent trucks and forget their height.
