Lier (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – In Lier, cycling fines on Lierse Vesten are paused due to improperly placed signs. Alderman Andries aims to improve safety, while a 2023 court case highlighted the need for legal signage.

In Lier, people can temporarily be allowed again on Sundays on Lierse Vesten. The city of Lier has decided not to give out any fines for biking on the Vesten until new signs are put up that follow the law.  This is because the old signs didn’t meet the legal requirements, so the fines couldn’t be enforced.

The police will still be watching the area. Even though they can’t give out fines right now, Officials mentioned that the police can still step in if they see bikers doing something dangerous.  If bikers are riding in a way that puts walkers, especially families with children, at risk, the police can do something about it even without fines.  The city wants to make sure that the Vesten is a safe place for everyone, and they will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Will Lier’s new signs solve cycling issues on Lierse Vesten?

The city of Lier wants to put up new signs as soon as possible to make it clear that biking is not allowed on the Vesten. But the city doesn’t know exactly when the new signs will be up because they need a special company to do the work.

Once the new signs are up, the city wants to make the Vesten a place where people can walk without having to worry about bikes. The city’s leader, Alderman Andries, said that bikes can be dangerous for people walking, especially young children.  The city will continue to try to control biking in this area to keep people safe.

In 2023, a cyclist was fined for riding a bike on a pedestrian pathway in Lier. The rider chose to challenge the fine, and a court case was the result in the police court. The court ruled in favor of the cyclist, finding that the fine could not be imposed because the prohibition sign against cycling had not been posted under the legal regulations. The sign was not up to the level of regulations required and was hence not legally binding.
