Leuven bridge accident ruled a human mistake no criminal charges

Leuven (Brussels Morning) -The investigation into the 2021 incident at the Vaartkom bridge in Leuven found that the cause was a mistake by an individual leading to the bridge being raised while a family’s car was still on it. The public prosecutor’s office concluded there were no legal grounds for a criminal trial, and the case was closed.

The incident at Vaartkom in Leuven back in 2021 where a car was on the bridge when it was opening has been found to have no legal grounds.The investigation revealed that it was due to a mistake by a person. The public prosecutor’s office stated that there is no need for a criminal trial and the case has been closed.

Leuven Bridge Incident 

The incident occurred on October 27, 2021 at the Marie Thumas Bridge in Leuven, Belgium where a family’s car fell off the bridge as it was opening to let a ship pass. The family consisting of two parents and their 1-year-old child was trapped inside the vehicle but only suffered minor injuries. The event was captured on camera showing the car sliding back and toppling over as the drawbridge lifted.

Following an investigation into the incident it was determined that the cause of the accident was a mistake by an individual leading to the bridge being raised while the family was still on it. The public prosecutor’s office concluded that there were no legal grounds for a criminal trial and as a result the case has been closed. This decision indicates that the incident was deemed to be a result of human error rather than any criminal intent or negligence.

The investigation found out that a mistake happened in the control room of Vlaamse Waterweg in Kampenhout. they always double-check if there are any cars left on the bridge but that day they missed it. The public prosecutor’s office decided not to take the case to court because they see it as a human mistake. They are focusing on getting compensation for the damage through insurance,as mentioned by spokesperson Sarah Callewaert.
