Lanaken (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Authorities are reopening a 1990 case of an unidentified man found in the Briegden-Neerharen canal, Lanaken. A new clay model and DNA testing may help. Contact police at 0800/30 300 with information.

Authorities are reopening a 1990 case after 35 years of an unidentified man found in the Briegden-Neerharen canal, Lanaken. The police are asking for help again. They made a clay model of his skull to show what he might have looked like. They hope this will help someone recognise him.

Who was the unidentified man found in Lanaken in 1990?

Authorities are asking the public for help to solve a case from 1990. They want anyone with information to reach out. People can contact the police through their website or call 0800/30 300. In Belgium, the emergency number 101 is also available.

The Limburg public prosecutor’s office is looking at new forensic methods, like DNA testing, to find family links. They mentioned that this has helped in other cases, and they hope it will help identify the man after all these years.

On February 4, 1990, a dead man was discovered by a lock keeper in Lanaken in the Briegden-Neerharen canal. Numerous investigations were carried out, but nobody is aware of who he is or how he died. He had a few Belgian francs in his pockets, which led authorities to believe that he could be Belgian. No traces of violence were detected, and the police did not know how he ended up in the water.

He was found at the Royal Dutch Paper Factory, which is located along the Dutch border. He probably had been dead for roughly a week. Police were notified to inspect the body. They wished to know the identity of the man and what is the cause of death.

The location was near an international boundary and an industrial complex. They looked for answers, but they couldn’t find them, and the case was never solved. Authorities said the most important clue was a tattoo on his left wrist that read “Jeannine.” Investigators thought this name could be linked to someone special in his life. Despite this clue, no one came forward to identify him.
