Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – EU foreign policy head Kaja Kallas said that Greenland’s sovereignty must be respected after Trump refused to rule out military action to seize the island.
European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas told journalists that Greenland is part of Denmark.
“We have to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Greenland,”
She said.
Kallas stated she had spoken to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen after Trump’s remarks.
“She assured that the Danish and American ties have been very sound,”
Kallas expressed.
“She also stated that it’s good that the president-elect takes an interest in the Arctic, which is a very significant region, both for security but also for climate change.”
What is Trump’s statement to acquire Greenland?
According to recent comments by President-elect Donald Trump, he renewed his interest in the acquisition of Greenland and does not rule out using military force or economic pressure to get it. In a news conference, Trump said that Greenland is strategically crucial to U.S. national security and economic interests, adding, “We need Greenland for national security purposes.”
When asked if he would rule out the use of military or economic means to acquire Greenland,
Trump replied,
“No, I can’t assure you on either of those two,”
meaning he was open to the idea. He even said Denmark could see tariffs “very high” if it stands in the way of U.S. ambitions regarding Greenland.
What concerns have Danish officials raised about Trump’s plans?
Danish officials have voiced concern over Trump’s seriousness regarding acquiring Greenland, which they point out is far removed from when he first mooted the idea in 2019. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has categorically declared that “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders” and cannot be sold. The European Union has also responded with a great deal of anger, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot declaring that the EU will not stand for any violation of its sovereign borders.
