As reported by the press of the European Union, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas will travel from December 14-15 to Jordan to partake in an international gathering on Syria arranged by the Kingdom of Jordan in In Aqaba.
Kaja Kallas will examine ongoing developments in Syria following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government, together with foreign ministers from Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Egypt, the League of Arab States, Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, as well as the United States, TĂĽrkiye and the UN representative for Syria.Â
The discussions will seek to support an inclusive, Syrian-led, political approach consistent with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. In the margins of the meeting, the High Representative Kallas will arrange several bilateral discussions.
How will the EU monitor Syria’s progress on commitments?
A few days earlier, Kaja Kallas said that the European Union would closely monitor the actions of the new leadership in Syria to resolve whether they pursue through with their prior commitments.
In an interview, Kallas voiced cautious optimism regarding the country’s future but admitted the situation remains uncertain, stating that the EU is in talks with regional foreign ministers, highlighting the need to dodge radicalization, terrorism, and the persecution of minorities while containing a return to civil fight. She also stressed that the European Union will not yet concentrate on clearing Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from its terrorist list but will persist in contending with them, as long as the exchanges align with European Union regulations.
